iEMBODY Nature & Animal now live at The Pod in the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA
I am so excited to be one of five artists in this new section of the Art & Nature Center at the Peabody Essex Museum. I hope the exhibition inspires folks to check out all the Northshore of MA has to offer as well as look deeper into their relationship with the natural world and the critters that inhabit it. Check out these two videos for a sneak peak of the instillation! Download this interactive map to travel the iEMBODY sites. Post any videos of you dancing with #PEMpod
“Think of your movements when you approach a waterfall. Do you take a deep inhale? Spread your arms? Exhale into a relaxed stance? My work amplifies the intrinsic reactions our bodies feel when present in nature. I translate sounds, shapes, colors, life, and light into movement connecting me to that specific place.”
Mystic Moves
Mystic Movies: An Embodied Investigation and Documentary of the Mystic River Watershed
The more we distance ourselves from the natural world physically or emotionally, we lose sight of our individual impacts on ecosystems both macro and micro. This paper defends dance and movement as a means to investigate the natural world, specifically the Mystic River Watershed, and develop a more intimate connection to place. Framed around the author’s experience as an a/r/tographer, the paper details the conception, implementation, and future steps for the project Mystic Moves. The project serves as an embodied exploration of the Mystic River Watershed inspired by the idea that water connects everything. Rooted in pedagogical approaches, such as experiential education, critical pedagogy of place, and dance based inquiry, this paper defends the use of community dance workshops as a means to inspire action and advocacy for watershed health. In addition to community workshops, a short documentary is created to disseminate to residents and potential partners as the author searches for a way to bring community members into the kinesthetic conversation. This paper not only discusses the embodied journey, but also gives context to the work by providing an overview of challenges and assets of the Mystic River Watershed.
